Capacity Global gets makeover on UN World Habitat Day to mark continuing focus on rejuvenating urban neighbourhoods
Living Space Project is the new name for Capacity Global , the organisation that has campaigned for clean and healthy environments for all since 2000.
Living Space Project founder, Maria Adebowale, explains that the new name reflects the approach that she and the team are taking to improve urban environments:
“Living Space Project is fresh. Our innovative projects focus on delivering urban green spaces and environmental place shaping through inclusive community engagement. Our approach can lift people out of poverty, increase social capital and protect the environment.”
Living Space Project is delighted to launch on UN World Habitat Day, an annual global celebration of urban places and a reminder that everyone has the right to an adequate place to live.
Living Space Project has expertise on:
• greening the regeneration of public spaces and places
• engaging with diverse communities
• greening local jobs, training and enterprise.
Currently Living Space Project is the Big Local Environment, Space and Place partner. Living Space Project is working with 20 Big Local communities to provide targeted support on a wide range of green space projects, from creating wildlife gardens to facilitating social enterprise cafes in parks.
We have also set up People’s Parks, in partnership with Xtend, which uses income-generating activities and innovative neighbourhood ownership models to maintain parks and green spaces.
And we’re continuing with our popular LARCs project, a legal advice and research clinic for communities that need help and advice on issues as diverse as asset transfer, green enterprises and setting up food growing initiatives. Our LARCs partners include the Environmental Law Centre and University College London.
Maria says that:
“The United Nations World Habitat Day is a reminder that we all have a responsibility to shape the future of our cities and towns. Living Space Project is pioneering innovative ways of making sure that all communities get to be part of this future place shaping, not just the privileged few.”
Maria is an Ambassador for the Social Enterprise Mark.
