MakeBelieve Arts is a theatre and education company that believes in the importance of making the arts accessible to everyone, starting from the youngest child and working upwards. We believe that all children are entitled to a high quality creative education. One of our principle aims is to target children and young people who are most at risk of missing out on these creative opportunities because of factors such as poverty and poor transportation. The problems associated with urban deprivation; poor literacy, lack of facilities and limited parental support are evident right across the borough of Lewisham where we are based, and the Deptford/Evelyn ward of the borough where we our housed falls into the bottom 10% in England using the Index of Multiple Deprivation score. MakeBelieve Arts are also beginning to develop a strong reputation for excellence in the boroughs of Southwark, Greenwich, Tower Hamlets, Westminster and Lambeth as well as acknowledgment for our work both nationally and internationally. Through our understanding of progressive educational philosophy we aim to create and deliver high quality participatory drama and theatre experiences for Nursery, Primary and Secondary Schools pupils, ranging from storytelling/story acting sessions for children aged 2 and above, through to workshops and performances that use drama and theatre techniques to compliment children's learning particularly in Literacy, Numeracy and Citizenship. Our work falls under 6 strands; Storytelling, Creative Approaches to the curriculum, Emotional Intelligence, Moving On up – exploring issues around transition, First Theatre experiences, In your Own Time evening/weekend programmes.
