Goodwin Development Trust

Goodwin Development Trust was set up in 1994 by residents of the Thornton Estate in Hull to improve their quality of life and the services available on their estate. From this catalyst of community spirit and entrepreneurial drive has grown an organisation that truly reflects the ethos of social enterprise. Goodwin is entirely community-owned and now employs over 250 staff with a turnover of £12 million, a community asset base of £11m and works across 25 sites to deliver services that improve the quality of life for residents throughout the city. Goodwin uses participatory appraisal techniques - an approach to learning about communities that places equal value on the knowledge and experience of local people and their capacity to come up with solutions to problems affecting them – to identify service gaps and work with residents and partners to tackle the underlying causes of community and social problems. The growth of Goodwin has been phenomenal in the short space of time in which it has existed and yet its original values and goals remain the same. Centred around four distinct themes – Health, Social Care & Wellbeing , Children & Young People, Employment, Education & Training and Safer, Stronger Communities - the services it delivers now and in the future will be as a result of listening to residents to ascertain what they feel is necessary for their well being and to continue to meet their needs. Goodwin sustains the activities in the key areas through its expanding community asset base. The assets owned by Goodwin are used for some of the following activities: Children's Centres and nurseries, resource facilities for the community, community health and recreation facilities, small business incubation space, conferencing and training facilities, managed office space and public access buildings, transport, catering and facilities management.
