The Community Film Unit is a collective of skilled young adults who work to empower individuals, communities and services through the power of film and the wider creative process. They are able to raise awareness of particular issues or events and have created a social enterprise based business model through ethical external financial commissions. Through the medium of film and a developing core of wider media tools, The Community Film Unit have three social objectives;
1) To raise awareness of local issues
2) To document and promote change within communities
3) To create educational and developmental opportunities for young people
To enhance the information and message transferred through the power of the DVD's, the Community Film Unit also has a graphic design element to their service, which, in conjunction with the DVD's, creates a unique and diverse informational package. When possible, the Community Film Unit train young people to use the professional camera / editing equipment prior to a production for their organisation. Under supervision they then have a hands on experience of the film making process, specifically for their organisation. This has proved to be an influential, engaging and excellent developmental experience where all involved learn new skills and are exposed to exciting new experiences.
The unit also offers developmental work experience opportunities to year 10 – year 13 students, and will look to take on University placement students every year to continue to maximise the opportunities given to young people in what is traditionally a challenging industry to gain experience. The unit have the capability of training young people in specific disciplines incorporated in the film making process. This involves engaging with them and teaching them skills that will benefit them in what is a limited employment climate for young people.
Public Services in particular have been able to benefit from the unit due to the accessibility of affordable, dynamic and professional media options, which are ethically delivered and safeguarded.
One of the units’ main achievements has been the appetite for and capability in delivering social change. The unit has worked cooperatively with all its partners to ensure that voices can be heard and images portrayed of the most vulnerable people in the community. They have pursued this vision with determination and insight, but have always concentrated on the positive, celebrating success wherever possible and highlighting need through the promotion of solutions.
The young adults responsible for the Community Film Unit have been able to thrive in a time where there is limited opportunity for young professionals. The units’ social aims look to positively influence unemployment in young people through workshops, work experience and placement opportunities.
The Community Film Unit have their broadcast debut on national television in 2011 and have recently been nominated for a national big society award.
