    Social Impact Statements

    The Social Enterprise Mark criteria includes a requirement that the applicant can demonstrate that social and/or environmental objectives are being achieved.

    In support of this, new applicants and renewing Mark holders must submit Social Impact Statements that summarise their headline activities and achievements, helping show how they are striving to make a difference and stand up to scrutiny of purpose as a social enterprise.


    1) Delivering Patient Led Clinical Education

    Our Patient Led Clinical Education work was commissioned 3 times in 2014/15 and is now expanding in to the area of mental health.

    We have invested in development of new group sessions on managing medicines for long term conditions and managing mental health. This includes recruiting 4 new CRN Associates and developing new materials and on-line resources.

    In addition, we have developed a unique service offering individual support sessions on medicines and treatments, where clinicians give advice and guidance an allow patients to take the lead. This is receiving national recognition and has now been commissioned for people who suffer from mental illness.

     


    2) Measures and impact of services

    In 2014/15 we delivered Patient Led Clinical Education sessions to 120 people in Cornwall and Somerset, across 10 locations, in courses led by our alliance partners Active Plus. This work is commissioned by the Department of Work and Pensions.

    We are measuring impact on patients in terms of clinical benefits, risk reduction and mental wellbeing (using the Warwick Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale). The average score at the beginning of the latest course was 41.1 and afterwards the average was 47.46. A difference of 3 to 8 points is considered meaningful, demonstrating that ‘mental wellbeing improved over the course of the project’. Our study showed an increase of 6.3 points.

    We have also developed an alliance with the nationally recognised organisation Meeting of Minds collaboration to help develop and roll this out.

    Our work is being presented in the NICE Medicines and Prescribing Programme and through our links as a Chapter of the international organisation the Institute for Healthcare Improvement.
    We have also linked with NHS Academic Health Science Networks in the South West and North West of England.

     


    3) Benefits of Patient Led Clinical Education

    Our Patient Led Clinical Education services are showing benefits in three areas:

    • Firstly, it starts to address is the fact that specialists in different areas of medicine only ever review the medicines they have prescribed. So people end up with a continuation of medicines they don’t need and often meds. which make things worse. By going through this in some detail, led by the person themselves who is free to ‘tell their story’, we are helping them make changes.
    • Secondly, it helps bring out the things people don’t normally tell their doctors (we all do this). In the jargon this is called ‘intentional non-adherence’. This increased trust and openness seems to be because we always deliver these reviews as part of larger project led by users of services, so by the time we see people they have built up a degree of trust in the process. Of course it helps greatly that we do not keep any notes, instead giving the action plan directly to the person we are seeing.
    • Thirdly, we’re finding some unexpected patient safety benefits. We’re learning that, as a result of the way the sessions are carried out, some people feel able to share information on their medicines and treatments with us that they haven’t previously shared with anyone. On a number of occasions we have been able to give advice on medicines safety and signpost people to services they need, but had previously either avoided or been unaware of.

    “My counsellor says my anxiety and depression have improved. My confidence levels have gone up a lot. I’m better at talking on the phone, more assertive. I’m more proactive, for example, I dealt with my referral to the pain clinic straight away rather than leave it. I’ve made a plan for the pain with my doctor, using the information and help given by Care Right Now. I was able to be more assertive when booking my appointments and it got the results; I was put on medication for my pain and referred to the pain clinic.     “The great thing about the course is that it’s not mandatory and it’s not just given by a couple of people. The trainers were genuine people who listened and who we can trust.
