Social Impact Statements
The Social Enterprise Mark criteria includes a requirement that the applicant can demonstrate that social and/or environmental objectives are being achieved.
In support of this, new applicants and renewing Mark holders must submit Social Impact Statements that summarise their headline activities and achievements, helping show how they are striving to make a difference and stand up to scrutiny of purpose as a social enterprise.
1) Developing specialist resources and services to support children with Down syndrome
The company’s principal activities during the year continued to be the development and distribution of specialist resources and services to support early intervention and education for children with Down syndrome and children with similar special needs. These included books, films, teaching materials, educational apps, workshops and conferences.
The company's products and services provide current, evidence-based information and expert advice about the developmental and educational needs of young people with Down syndrome and therapies and techniques designed to meet these needs. By helping parents, teachers, therapists and organisations provide evidence-based therapies and teaching approaches, the company improves educational outcomes for children with Down syndrome.
2) Measures of support provided on international scale
In the 5 years to December 2015, the company served 8,200 clients in 90 countries. These included 3,200 clients in 60 countries supplied by Down Syndrome Education USA, an associated non-profit distributing the company’s products in North America.
In addition, during the 19 months to December 2015, the company supplied 2,500 apps to customers in 29 countries via intermediary app stores.
3) Improving outcomes for young people with Down syndrome
