Unlimited Potential is a democratically-controlled social enterprise based in Salford that specialises in social innovation for happiness and health. We are a community benefit society whose objects are:
- To support people to lead happier and healthier lives.
- To help people who want to develop their skills and abilities to fulfil their potential.
- To be a happy and healthy enterprise that has the best possible impact for people and for a sustainable world.
Unlimited Potential develops innovations to address some of the most challenging social and economic issues, drawing on local people’s strengths. We run a number of exploratory projects at any time. We also have over ten years of running services with local people.

The Social Enterprise Mark criteria includes a requirement that the applicant can demonstrate that social and/or environmental objectives are being achieved.
In support of this, new applicants and renewing Mark holders must submit Social Impact Statements that summarise their headline activities and achievements, helping show how they are striving to make a difference and stand up to scrutiny of purpose as a social enterprise.

1) Delivering projects to promote health and wellbeing
During 2015-2016, the services and projects that were run by Unlimited Potential were:
- Being Well Salford: supporting people with multiple risks to make changes to improve their health and well-being
- Dadly Does It: working with fathers to improve their children’s health
- Eccles Together in Health: GP practices and local people creating solutions togethe
- Health Trainers: helping people to make healthier choices in their lives
- Healthwatch Salford: giving local people a strong voice in health and social care
- Time Banking: enabling local people to swap skills and reduce isolation
We are also involved in Realising the Value, a national programme designed to further develop the field of person and community-centred approaches for health and well-being. It is doing this by building the evidence-base and developing tools to spread awareness and increase the impact of key approaches.
2) Measures of support provided
During 2015-2016, the people who benefitted from our services and projects were:
- Being Well Salford: people with multiple health risk factors in Salford (1,109 participants)
- Dadly Does It: fathers in two neighbourhoods in Salford (approximately 48 fathers, 30 mothers, 48 children)
- Eccles Together in Health: people attending general practices in Eccles, Salford (approximately 50 people)
- Health Trainers: people wishing to make healthier choices in Salford (760 people)
- Healthwatch Salford: engaging the whole population of Salford; talked with over 150 local services and groups; met hundreds of local people ‘out and about’ in the community
- Time Banking: members swapping skills in Pendleton, Salford (57 people)
Within the total population of Salford, Unlimited Potential therefore engaged at least 2,102 people during 2015-2016.
3) Outcomes of services and projects
During 2015-2016, the outcomes for people from our services and projects were:
- Being Well Salford: 640 people (49%) significantly improved their mental well-being; 161 people (69%) lost weight; 122 (75%) reduced their smoking; 76 (45%) reduced their drinking; and 435 (82%) improved their self-efficacy
- Dadly Does It: for every £1 invested, the project to date yielded approximately £20 of social value, including approximtely £14 of well-being value to the core fathers, and a potential financial return to the public sector of £2.25 of potential savings
- Eccles Together in Health: it is too early in the project to assess outcomes to local people
- Health Trainers: 575 people (75%) achieved at least one of their well-being goals; and 94.5% of people who completed a second wellbeing outcome star improved their score
- Healthwatch Salford: projects tackled issues ranging from mental health to elective surgery
- Time Banking: in a comparative survey, members reported the greatest impact was on: 1. friendships; 2. self-confidence and self-esteem; 3. social connectedness / reducing social isolation; 4. happiness and fulfilment; 5. physical and emotional well-being; and 6. feeling a valued member of the community
In addition, we assess the added social value of our organisation. In 2015-2016, this was:
- 46 members - a decrease of 17.9% in membership over the year (from 56 at 31 March, 2015)
- 22 members attended the Annual Meeting on 26 October, 2015 (an 8.3% decrease from 23 October, 2014)
- Advisory Council held three meetings during 2015-2016, a decrease of 40.0% from 2014-2015
- In 2015-2016, the proportion of non-direct/staffing expenditure spent with ethical suppliers was 38.08%, a decrease from 40.36% in 2014-2015
- At the end of 2015-2016, 66.7% of employees (12 out of 18) were local residents (living within five miles of their normal work base), a decrease from 84.6% at the end of 2014-2015
- energy efficiency: 0.579 tonnes CO2e per person; a 28.4% increase on 2014-2015 (0.451 tonnes CO2e per person equivalent)
- waste and emissions:
- total bins – 40.8 per person; a 25.1% decrease on 2014-2015 (54.5 bins per person)
- total CO2e travel emissions:
- commuting: 0.590 tonnes C02e per person; a 5.5% decrease on 2014-2015 (0.625 tonnes C02e per person)
- business-related travel: 0.152 tonnes CO2e per person; a 28.8% decrease on 2014-2015 (0.213 tonnes CO2e per person)
