    Social Impact Statements

The Social Enterprise Mark criteria includes a requirement that the applicant can demonstrate that social and/or environmental objectives are being achieved.

In support of this, new applicants and renewing Mark holders must submit Social Impact Statements that summarise their headline activities and achievements, helping show how they are striving to make a difference and stand up to scrutiny of purpose as a social enterprise.

    Updated October 2016

    1) Embedding and growing social enterprise in Coventry

With a specific commitment to Social Enterprise, Coventry University’s subsidiary Coventry University Social Enterprise (CUSE) CIC is the first Social Enterprise created by a University with the sole purpose of embedding and growing Social Enterprise within the DNA of the Coventry University Group.

We continue to engage with and support Social Enterprises which have been created by a number of Staff, Students and Alumni through The Enterprise Hub, Champions network and Enterprise Engagement initiative (direct contact lectures, tutor groups and Enterprise Café).

As a global organisation we recognise the contribution we can make both socially and environmentally, embracing diversity, providing knowledge and skills to students and staff, supporting communities and benefiting the local economy. Sustainability is integral to our operations; ensuring responsible thinking and practices that bring about positive change for the future.

    2) Key activities

    • Creation of a social enterprise forum - monthly meetings, which consist of local Social Enterprises and business support agencies to collaborate on joint projects and bids such as Social Enterprise Place status, in order to:
      • Increase understanding of social enterprises in the City, through researching current state, identifying further opportunities and bench-marking activity
      • Raise the profile of Social Enterprise by holding a number of events across the city to raise the profile of social enterprises, including a Buy Social Event, Business 2 Business Event and social enterprise day event within Global Entrepreneurship Week
    • We have created a successful engagement programme, whereby Enterprise Officers are presenting to students and staff in all of the various faculties, schools and departments across the University in order to create a wider support network. We have so far successfully carried out 1,200 engagements through the programme
    • We are also focussing on identifying and building on the existing network of Social Enterprise Champions through the engagement programme. Social Enterprise Champions consist of Staff members (both academic and professional) who are either running or have a passion for helping their students and peers to grow their social enterprises with the support of CUSE
    • We achieved a recycling rate of 74% in the year which is an increase of 3% on the previous year, and as a result, 224 tonnes of carbon was saved

    3) Accolades and key successes

In 2016, we were named Modern University of the year for the 3rd consecutive year, and number 1 for Student satisfaction in Times & Sunday Times Good University guide. We were also voted Times Higher Education's University of the Year in 2015.

Coventry University was shortlisted for the 2016 Times Higher Education Awards for initiatives such as Coventry University Social Enterprise (CUSE) and the recently-launched African Institute for Transformational Entrepreneurship (AITE), which helped to secure Coventry a nomination for the ‘Entrepreneurial University of the Year’ award.

CUSE has successfully assisted 10 Social enterprises to start up so far this year, including the Fab Lab Coventry; a social impact and innovation hub in the heart of the City which provides widespread access to modern means for invention to the local community (citizens of all ages, students, entrepreneurs to name a few) including 3D Printing, Moulding & Casting, CAD modelling, Milling, Electronics & Programming.

We have grown the social enterprise pipeline/network to over 50 individuals.
