  • HiSbe is a new type of supermarket, with a social enterprise model that serves the interests of people and communities. Here are some of the ways that we’re different:

    • HiSbe runs on a social enterprise model that puts happiness before profits. Instead of maximising short-term profit, like big supermarkets, we pay and charge what’s fair. Employees get above the living wage, suppliers get a good deal and prices are set so customers pay a fair price for well-sourced goods.
    • HiSbe sells everyday food, but not the big brands. We prioritise local products and work with suppliers and wholesalers who care about health, sustainability and trading fairly. We compete with the big supermarkets by creating a happy shopping experience, charging fair prices and demonstrating our values in everything we do.

    Social Impact Statements

    The Social Enterprise Mark criteria includes a requirement that the applicant can demonstrate that social and/or environmental objectives are being achieved.

    In support of this, new applicants and renewing Mark holders must submit Social Impact Statements that summarise their headline activities and achievements, helping show how they are striving to make a difference and stand up to scrutiny of purpose as a social enterprise.

    1) Improving health, happiness and wellbeing

    • Health, happiness and wellbeing of customers:
      • Provide high quality, nutritious, everyday food without the associated premium prices
      • Work only with suppliers and wholesalers who care about health, sustainability and trading fairly
    • Health, happiness and wellbeing of staff:
      • Create rewarding and valued jobs
      • Pay above the Living Wage, plus 20% off all shopping
      • Self-managing culture, for happy jobs and working environment
      • 11 staff running the store independently
    • Health, happiness and wellbeing of suppliers:
      • Pay fair prices and terms
      • Build partnerships
      • Showcase what they do
      • Hold events in store so they can meet customers and samples their goods
      • Local food system
      • Give local and independent producers a route to market
      • Help them scale up
      • Give opportunities to start-up food businesses to launch in store and sample their goods with our suppliers
    • Local economy:
      • Employ local people
      • Prioritise local suppliers
      • Prioritise local service providers
      • Support local food entrepreneurs
      • Support Good money gift vouchers
      • hiSbe is an anchor business on a previously run-down road that’s undergoing regeneration

     


    2) Key measures of activity

    To date, we have:

    • Served 3,000+ customers and their families
    • Employed 11 staff, who are running the store independently
    • Worked with 89 suppliers and their dependents
    • Invited 67 local suppliers and 26 other suppliers to provide samples of their products in store
    • Worked with 28 businesses, 8 entrepreneurs and given £800 in vouchers.

    As a % of our income, we give:

    • 66.2% to suppliers
    • 22.2% to wages
    • 10.3% to store bills
    • 1.3% is net profit

    We set targets for a “fair” profit:

    • Target GP 33-7%. NP 1-3%
    • Actual GP 34%. NP 1%

    We measure how much of our stock bill goes to suppliers based in Sussex. Our target is 40-50% and the actual figure is 40%.

    We also measure how much money we spend in Sussex. Our target is 50-60% (big supermarkets keep 5% in local economy). The actual figure is 50%:7
